About Tasmania

Tasmania is an archipelago of more than 300 islands, located 40 degrees south of the equator. The main island spans 296km from north to south and 315km from east to west, with 3,000km of coastline. It is considered to be the world’s most temperate climate island and in fact, Hobart is Australia’s second-driest capital City. The population of Tasmania is approximately 476,200, with 198,000 people living in Hobart. No one in Tasmania lives more than two hour’s drive from the sea.

Tasmania's East Coast

Tasmania protects more of its land than any other state in Australia, with around 40% set aside in State and coastal reserves, national parks and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Tasmania is 'bushwalking heaven', with over 2,000km of tracks in 18 national parks. Rich in bio-diversity, Tasmania is home to such unusual animals as the Tasmanian devil, spotted tailed quolls, pygmy possums and swift parrots, as well as its native flowers, unique Huon pine and the world’s oldest living organism 'King's holly' (which is a self-cloning shrub), the tallest flowering plant 'Eucalyptus regnans' and rocks dating back 1,100 million years!

The air measured at Tasmania’s air-monitoring station at Cape Grim in the state’s north-west is regarded as some of the cleanest air in the world. Tasmania’s clean waters make it Australia’s sumptuous seafood larder and includes rock lobster, Atlantic salmon, ocean trout, Pacific oysters, abalone, blue mussels and scallops. Diving Tasmania’s waters is a unique experience, with some of the most mysterious creatures of the deep including a 20-metre giant squid, a 400kg sunfish, giant bull kelp and giant crabs that weigh up to 15kg.

All food grown in Tasmania is GE-free and Tasmania is the only state that bans the use of hormonal growth promotants in the cattle industry. Fertile soils, four distinct seasons, pure air and clean water result in premium produce, ranging from gourmet cheeses, yoghurts, chocolate, walnuts, honey, mushrooms, apples, berries and cherries, to tangy mountain peppers and saffron. Tasmania is Australia’s coolest wine producing region, with over 140 vineyards in seven distinct wine regions across the island, 42 of which offer cellar-door facilities. Tasmania is particularly well-known for its award-winning sparkling wines, sauvignon blanc and pinot noirs. Its beer too, is highly praised world-wide.

Spectacular landscapes, lush forests, pristine beaches, historic sites, bustling markets rich with local craft, woodwork, textiles and talented musicians, gourmet food, award-winning wines – Tasmania offers so much to see, do, taste, hear and smell. The east coast of Tasmania is one of continual discovery and delight, with its surf beaches, rivers, rich rural valleys and mountains.
