The Retreat

The Gardens

Take a walk through the gardens. The red brick walkway is made entirely from convict bricks which have been brought to the property from the old school in George Town, Tasmania. Look for the tell tale thumbprints and arrow marks on the bricks.

History

The original house was built as a labour of love for Graham’s wife, Adrienne who planted the original herb garden. Returning home from America, Adrienne carried a clipping of her dream house with her to Tasmania. Graham, her husband took the photo and designed and built the original house.

The staircase banister is from the Launceston library, the door fittings, light fittings, ceiling and dado boards used in the kitchen are from the old school house which was situated in Anne Street in George Town.
Graham found the convict bricks under the building when he demolished it and they were the foundation to the first Women’s prison in Tasmania. Some of the fittings date back to the early 1900’s.

The Herb Farm

While you’re here, why not spend a little time acquainting yourself with our range of fresh herbs. The herb and vegetable garden is edged by our own mountain fed stream. All our fresh herbs and herb products are available for purchase.

The Organic Herb farm used to provide gourmet chefs throughout Tasmania with fresh herbs. Unfortunately the garden was almost destroyed in bushfires in 2006 and is now in the process of regeneration to its former glory.
Currently the garden offers a range of lavendars including French and white varieties, French and lemon scented thyme, Italian parsley, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, chives and fresh salad greens. Surrounding the garden are bay trees, lemon trees, apple trees and a few grape vines.

The organic vegetable garden is located in the hothouse (to protect from local wildlife who also love our fresh produce) these include: tomatoes, beans, snowpeas, corn, cucumbers, pumpkins, lettuce, cucinis, squash, capsicums and strawberries.
